Indian Football Legend Baichung Bhutia Arrives in Nepal for FIFA World Cup 2026 Special Events (Photos)

June 23, Kathmandu – South Asia’s renowned footballer and former captain of Indian football, Baichung Bhutia, has arrived in Nepal to take part in special pre-match and post-match events for FIFA World Cup 2026.

Bhutia arrived in Nepal on Tuesday afternoon, where he was warmly welcomed at Tribhuvan International Airport by Himalaya Sports Television’s Chief Executive Officer Suraj Giri and others.

Himalaya Sports, the official and exclusive broadcaster of FIFA World Cup 2026 in Nepal, has announced that Bhutia’s presence will make their World Cup broadcast campaign even more captivating.

On this occasion, Suraj Giri, CEO and director of Himalaya Sports, expressed his happiness in welcoming Bhutia to Nepal. He said, “Bhutia’s presence alongside Nepalese football stars will make the World Cup experience even more memorable for football fans across the country.”

Bhutia is set to participate in the special pre-match and post-match shows. Himalaya Sports confirmed that he will be attending these programs this evening, which will also feature prominent football players and personalities from Nepal.

Known as the ‘Sikkimese Sniper,’ Baichung Bhutia is one of India’s most successful and celebrated former captains. Born into a middle-class farming family in Sikkim, he demonstrated exceptional football talent from an early age and went on to represent India internationally.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Bhutia elevated Indian football to new heights and became the first Indian player to sign with a European club, agreeing to play for Bury FC. Over his international career, he played more than 100 matches for India and scored over 40 international goals.

Amid the excitement around the world’s biggest football tournament, the presence of Bhutia and other Nepalese football legends is expected to make the World Cup experience even more special for Nepalese viewers.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 matches are being broadcast in Nepal via Himalaya Sports HD on television and through the digital platform DGO. Viewers can purchase packages costing NPR 999 for television access or NPR 549 for mobile access via DGO.

The World Cup broadcast campaign includes Red Bull as the title sponsor and Proton Emas as a co-sponsor. Coca-Cola is also participating as a presenting partner.

Additional partners include Real Juice, YY Chow Chow, and TVS Motorcycles. The involvement of national and international players is expected to make the World Cup broadcast campaign in Nepal more extensive and impactful.
