The Golden Boot competition at this World Cup is thrilling like never before in decades.
After just two matches, Lionel Messi has scored five goals, while Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have each netted four.
This is only the second time in World Cup history that three players have scored four or more goals each after two games. The previous record dates back to 1954.
The world’s top forwards have been scoring unprecedented goals right from the opening stages of this World Cup.
In the match against Austria, Messi scored twice and broke the record for the most goals scored in World Cup history.
During the France vs Iraq match, which was delayed due to flight issues, Mbappe scored two goals marking his hundredth international appearance.
Following this, it was Norway’s Haaland’s turn to strike; making his World Cup debut, he scored two goals leading Norway to defeat Senegal and advance to the round of 32.
The playing field is such that when one player performs well, the others strive to outdo that performance.
At the biggest competition in world football, we are witnessing new records being broken consistently.
French football analyst Julien Laurens told BBC, “Top players always want to keep the ball with them.”
“In my view, they are competing not only for the Golden Boot but to break long-standing records.”
Records Broken on the Days When Superstars Shine

Originally, German player Miroslav Klose held the record as the highest goal scorer with 16 goals.
But Messi has now broken this record by scoring 18 goals in just two games, contributing all 18 goals for Argentina.
Mbappe is not far behind; he has matched Klose’s record with 16 goals in 16 matches, competing closely with England’s Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot at the World Cup.
Laurens said, “We had thought Kylian Mbappe could incredibly come close to Messi’s record at this stage.”
Manchester City striker Haaland also has the potential to break this record. If he maintains this scoring rate, he will be a strong contender in the competition.
The 25-year-old is the sixth player in World Cup history to score two or more goals in each of their first two matches. He has scored 59 goals in 52 games for Norway.

Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist said, “Based on natural football ability, Messi leads, Mbappe is second, and Haaland could be third.”
He added, “Despite comparing these three, Harry Kane deserves recognition as a human footballer. But when it comes to putting the ball in the net, Haaland is unparalleled.”
England’s former midfielder Karren Carney told ITV, “That day belonged to the superstars. Messi drew all attention, but Mbappe and Haaland also showed exceptional performance.”
They Are Impossible to Stop
From day one, the world’s most dangerous forwards have begun shattering records at this World Cup.
Messi holds many records and is delivering a brilliant performance.
Beyond these players, Mbappe has become France’s top goal scorer, Haaland Norway’s highest scorer, and Kane has equaled Gary Lineker’s record for England.

In 1958, France’s Just Fontaine set the record for 13 goals in a single World Cup, a benchmark that is still widely admired.
So far, only Fontaine, Gerd Müller (1970), and Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis (1954) have scored 10 or more goals in one World Cup.
This year, with 48 teams participating in the World Cup, the number of goals is expected to increase, potentially adding new players to the scoring records by the end of the tournament.
Additionally, since winners will play an extra knockout round after the group stage, the prospect for more goals is further heightened.
Former French defender Gaël Clichy commented, “Kylian Mbappe represents a new generation with fearless confidence.”
“Back when I started playing, respect was given to the older generation. This new generation also demands respect, but in a different way. We should judge by their performance, not age.”
Mbappe on the Golden Boot said, “I’m not thinking about that right now. Leo [Messi] always scores and keeps scoring.”
“When I watch him, it feels like he still has much more to do. So, I haven’t been paying close attention to what he’s doing. My focus is on helping my team. I will score and reach that level.”
Norway’s manager Ståle Solbakken supported Haaland, saying it will be easier for players of France and Argentina to win the Golden Boot because they will provide Haaland with more playing opportunities.
United States striker Folarin Balogun made a strong start by scoring two goals in his first match.
Balogun said, “This Golden Boot competition is very tough. Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland cannot be stopped. They score one or more goals in every match.”
“I’m trying to reach that level too, aiming to become another unstoppable player.”
