Mexico Poised for Clean Sweep as Three Other Teams Face Do-or-Die Pressure
Having already secured a spot in the knockout stage with one match remaining, Mexico’s group rivals Czech Republic, South Korea, and South Africa remain in contention for the knockout rounds. Co-host Mexico is set to play its final group stage match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at home against the Czech Republic. The Group ‘A’ leaders Mexico, who have already advanced as group winners, will face the Czech Republic at the Mexico City Stadium on Thursday morning at 6:45 AM local time. At the same time, South Africa will compete against South Korea at the Monterrey Stadium.
In Group ‘A’, Mexico leads with 6 points from a perfect record of two wins. South Korea holds second place with 3 points, while the Czech Republic and South Africa have 1 point each. The top two teams from each group will directly advance to the knockout stage. Additionally, the best eight third-placed teams from the 12 groups will also progress to the knockout rounds. With Mexico’s qualification already confirmed, the Czech Republic, South Korea, and South Africa are still battling for advancement.
The Czech Republic aims to secure a spot in the knockout phase by defeating Mexico. Following a 2–1 loss to South Korea and a 1–1 draw with South Africa, the Czech team must beat Mexico to keep hopes alive, though even a win may not guarantee progression, as it will depend also on other group results.
South Africa and South Korea will face each other for the first time in FIFA World Cup history. Returning to the World Cup after 16 years, South Africa is eager to claim its first victory. After losing 2–0 to Morocco in their opening match and drawing 1–1 against the Czech Republic, South Africa will look to defeat South Korea by a significant margin to maintain their knockout stage hopes.
