Why Did the US Attack Iran Amid a Ceasefire?

After President Donald Trump condemned an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz as a “foolish violation” of the ceasefire, the US military launched strikes on specific Iranian locations. On Thursday, drones targeted the ship, but no human casualties have been reported. Following the incident, preparations began for a coordinated rescue operation for thousands of sailors stranded in the area.

In response, the US Central Command announced on Friday that it had attacked missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar stations. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) blamed both the US and Israel for the attacks. Moments before the US strikes were announced, when asked whether retaliatory actions against Iran would take place, President Trump replied, “You will see.”

The US Central Command described the attacks as a “powerful response” to the drone strike. Their statement said, “The unjust attack on commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violates the ceasefire.” The command also emphasized its coordination and cooperation efforts to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

It remains unclear whether these recent US strikes are temporary measures or part of a longer-term strategic plan. In a statement released late Friday, the IRGC said, “The US regime, which constantly breaks its commitments by violating agreements, launched airstrikes in Iranian coastal areas, using the excuse of an unauthorized vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.” Furthermore, the IRGC warned, “If such attacks are repeated, our response will be even broader than this time.”
