Nepal to Participate in 23 Sports at the 20th Asian Games
June 18, Kathmandu – Nepal is set to participate in 23 sports at the 20th Asian Games, currently being held in Japan. According to Ramcharitra Mehta, member-secretary of the National Sports Council (Rakhap), approximately 140 Nepali athletes will be competing. Speaking at the ‘Road to Aichi-Nagoya 2026’ event organized by the Nepal Sports Journalists Forum on the occasion of World Sports Journalists Day 2026, Mehta stated that, although some technical arrangements remain, Nepal’s participation in around 23 sports is almost confirmed.
He also mentioned that the government aims to win double-digit medals at the Asian Games and is preparing to send athletes abroad for training. Jeevan Ram Shrestha, President of the Nepal Olympic Committee, noted that progressing preparations for the Asian Games is positive under the ‘Mission 26’ initiative. According to member-secretary Mehta, the government has allocated NPR 28 million for preparation for the Asian Games and an additional NPR 112 million for participation in the competition.
Nepal plans to compete in karate, women’s kabaddi, wrestling, wushu, men’s cricket, athletics, judo, women’s volleyball, taekwondo, badminton, breaking and dance sports, cycling, e-sports, golf, rafting and canoeing, swimming, squash, soft tennis, skating and skateboarding, table tennis, archery, boxing, and tennis – totaling 23 sports in all.
