Brazil Misses Penalty as First Half Ends Goalless Against Norway

Brazil’s Bruno Guimarães missed a penalty early in the first half. June 22, Kathmandu. The first half of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Brazil and Norway ended in a goalless draw. The game, held at New Jersey Stadium in New York, saw Brazil fail to capitalize on an early penalty, resulting in a scoreless first half.

Brazilian Bruno Guimarães’s penalty attempt in the 14th minute was saved by Norway’s goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. The penalty was awarded after referee, with the help of VAR, ruled that Norway’s Kristoffer Ajer fouled a Brazilian player inside the penalty box. Despite the opportunity, Guimarães’s shot was successfully denied by Nyland.

Bruno Guimarães has now become the first Brazilian player in 40 years to miss a penalty at the World Cup, with the last being Zico, who missed against France in 1986. Throughout the first half, Norway maintained greater possession, holding approximately 65% of the ball and making eight shots, two of which were on target. Brazil, in comparison, made four shots with two on target.

Historically, Norway remains unbeaten against Brazil in their four previous encounters, including a notable 2-1 victory over Brazil at the 1998 World Cup.
