Russia Launches Large Missile Attack on Kyiv Amid Russia-Ukraine War

Russian forces fired multiple ballistic missiles at Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, resulting in one death and at least 14 injuries, according to officials. Attacks continued overnight across various locations in the Kyiv region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the assault on Kyiv as “one of the largest ballistic missile attacks” since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian military reported that out of 41 missiles launched by Russia, their air defense systems intercepted 18. Additionally, 108 drones were reportedly shot down. Ukraine continues to strike Russian targets in retaliation. The Ukrainian military confirmed drone attacks on two Russian oil tankers located in the Black Sea. The pipeline operator overseeing a terminal used to transport oil from Kazakhstan through the Black Sea to Russia acknowledged the attack but stated that there were no human casualties or oil spills.

In a separate incident, the governor of Russia’s southwestern Stavropol region reported a fire at an industrial park caused by a drone attack. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia used Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles, among other weaponry, in the latest assault over Kyiv. Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported on Sunday that both residential and non-residential buildings sustained damage in recent attacks.

In a message posted on Telegram, President Zelensky revealed that within a week, Russia deployed approximately 1,450 drones, over 1,640 bombs, and 99 various types of missiles in attacks against Ukraine. A drone strike on two separate warehouses of Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer known as the “Russian Amazon,” resulted in eight fatalities. The following day, Russia launched attacks on the Ukrainian capital again. In Tambov, a city about 475 kilometers southeast of Moscow, a warehouse attack killed seven people and injured 25 others.

President Zelensky asserted that the strikes targeted locations involved in supplying equipment that is banned from drone production. Ukraine has intensified drone assaults on critical Russian energy infrastructure, contributing to fuel shortages in Russia. Earlier this month, Kyiv claimed to have disabled roughly 43 percent of Russia’s oil refining capacity.
