Intense Struggle to Contain Wildfires in France and Spain; Thousands Evacuated to Safety

Firefighters are relentlessly working to control the severe wildfire near Bordeaux, France. Thousands of residents from the surrounding areas have been evacuated to safe locations due to the raging flames. France’s Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, described the situation as still “highly adverse,” with the fire spreading “irregularly” toward Bordeaux. However, authorities stated that there is currently no urgent need to evacuate the city itself. From Saturday night until Sunday morning, approximately 55,000 people from the southern villages near Bordeaux have been relocated to safety. This region is well-known for its vineyards.

For over a week, wildfires have been spreading across various parts of Europe, especially in France and Spain. More than 330,000 people in these two countries have been moved to safer areas so far. France remains the most severely affected, with 42,000 hectares of forest destroyed in the southwestern region, marking it as the most extensive forest fire since World War II. Since the beginning of this year, over 98,000 hectares of forest across the country have been consumed by flames. More than 220,000 people have been evacuated just from southwestern France.

In Spain, the fire continues to spread as well. Authorities report that over 90,000 people from areas around Madrid and Ávila have been relocated. Approximately 77,000 hectares have been affected by the fires. Tourists in Madrid have reported seeing smoke and flames near the airport. A couple visiting from New Zealand even sensed the smell of smoke at their hotel in the city. On Saturday, a small fire in the Valencia area resulted in the death of a civilian. Earlier in the week, two firefighters lost their lives while combating a fierce blaze near Bordeaux in France. Over 2,500 firefighters have been deployed in the Gironde area of France, including a team from Switzerland. Additionally, a large number of military personnel and police are assisting in evacuations, rescue operations, and maintaining security.
