
Reduced Sugar Intake Before Age Two Indicates Improvement in Brain Health

Scientists have indicated that consuming less sugar before the age of two could signal long-term improvements in brain health decades later.
This research studied the rapid increase in sugar consumption in diets following the lifting of sugar purchase restrictions in the UK.
Findings reveal that during the period when sugar rationing was enforced, the risk of dementia in children was reduced by 23 percent.
While the study is not conclusive, experts advise that a healthy diet supports brain health.
This is not the first study to highlight the critical importance of the first 1,000 days for future health.
Following World War II, the UK conducted various studies on ending rationing systems and ‘natural experiments’ aimed at restoring the nation to pre-war conditions.
What Did the Study Find?

The UK rationing system for sugar purchases ended in September 1953.
Immediately after, average daily sugar intake doubled from 41 grams (10 teaspoons) to 80 grams (20 teaspoons).
Previous research linked this increase with higher rates of type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
The latest study involved approximately 65,000 participants from the UK Biobank project.
Analysts from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology examined the effects of the sugar rationing period on children.
They found children with restricted sugar intake until age two exhibited a 23 percent lower risk of dementia and a delayed diagnosis by about two and a half years.
“Our study suggests that limiting sugar intake in early life may lead to long-term improvements in brain health,” said lead researcher Giazhen Zheng.
The findings were published in the journal Neurology, though the researchers noted further study is necessary to confirm if sugar itself is the causal factor.

Experts React
Rachel Richardson, head of evidence production and research methods at the independent nonprofit medical research network Cochrane, commented, “They may be on the right track.”
“This study could provide an important indication,” Richardson said. “However, it cannot be taken as definitive evidence of a direct relationship between childhood sugar intake and dementia risk.”
She also emphasized the study is incomplete regarding the link between sugar intake in childhood and dementia.
The biggest challenge is researchers cannot know how much sugar people studied consumed in childhood at their birth time.
“This evidence relates to people born in the 1940s and 1950s, so it may have limited relevance for children today. At that time, children were transitioned to solid foods earlier than now, which played a significant role in early nutrition.”
Ian Myadment, a clinical pharmacy professor at Aston University, said, “It’s an interesting concept that will help inform ongoing debates, but more evidence is needed in my view.”
He added, “Any factors from 80 years ago linked to health today could have been influenced by many other variables.”
Dr. Sarah Rodriguez from Alzheimer’s Research UK said, “It is important to remember this is just an observational study.”
“It may show a link between diet and dementia risk but cannot definitively prove that reduced sugar intake lowers dementia risk.”
“A healthy, balanced diet is the best way to improve your brain health, and it’s never too late to make positive changes.”
