Besides Poland, Russia and France have each won the VNL twice, while Brazil has claimed the title once. In the third-place match, Slovenia defeated Japan 3-2 to win the bronze medal. Slovenia overcame Japan with set scores of 25-21, 26-28, 25-22, and 25-22. Japan had advanced to the semifinals by defeating China after winning 12 straight matches in the preliminary rounds. However, they were unable to reach the final after losing to the USA and also fell short in the third-place match.
