‘July People’s Uprising Memorial Museum’ Inaugurated at Sheikh Hasina’s Official Residence in Bangladesh

In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the official residence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Ganabhaban, has been inaugurated as the ‘July People’s Uprising Memorial Museum.’ This museum was established by the interim government to honor the citizens who lost their lives during the student movement of July–August 2024. According to a United Nations report, over 1,400 civilians died due to excessive use of force by security personnel during the uprising.

The formal inauguration ceremony of the ‘July People’s Uprising Memorial Museum’ took place on Wednesday at Ganabhaban. The museum commemorates those civilians who passed away during the student protests of July–August 2024. Prime Minister Tariq Rahman officially opened the museum in Ganabhaban, located in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, according to news agency PTI. The event had been held on August 5.

On the same day in 2024, Sheikh Hasina had left the country for India amid the unrest. A United Nations Human Rights Office report from February 2025 documented that the student movement, which lasted from July 15 to August 15, 2024 (known as the July People’s Uprising), resulted in 1,400 civilian deaths. The report highlighted the excessive force used by security forces at the direction of Hasina’s government against protesters. The protests initially began as opposition to the reservation policy in government employment, after which Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country on August 5, 2024. Three days later, Mohammad Yunus started serving as the chief adviser to the interim government. The process of establishing the museum and preserving Ganabhaban was initiated by the interim government led by Yunus.
