
US Senate Imposes Harsh Sanctions on Russia, Enforces 100% Tariffs on Five Countries Including India
23rd Shrawan, Kathmandu—The US Senate has passed a bill with an overwhelming majority aimed at penalizing Russia and major importers of its petroleum products, including China, India, and other countries. According to news agency PTI, the bill is titled ‘Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.’ The Senate approved the legislation by a vote of 86–11.
The bill grants President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on goods entering the US from the top five countries importing oil and gas from Russia.
Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, commented on the possible impact of this bill on the India–US trade talks, stating, ‘It depends on the negotiators. I cannot currently comment on the ongoing process.’
