Sandeep Lamichhane Reappointed Captain, Faces Challenge to Retain ODI Status

Sandeep Lamichhane, appointed captain for the second time, now faces the critical challenge of maintaining Nepal’s ODI status. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) replaced Rohit Paudel and named Sandeep as the national team’s ODI captain. Lamichhane will lead the team starting August 30 in the ACC Premier Cup in Malaysia. After a period of poor performance raising concerns about retaining ODI status, Sandeep has taken on the captaincy responsibility again after four years.

As of 26th Shrawan in Kathmandu, Nepal’s One Day International (ODI) status is under threat due to ongoing subpar results. Failure to perform well in the coming matches risks Nepal losing the ODI status it earned eight years ago. Amidst this crisis, the responsibility of steering Nepali cricket has fallen on Sandeep Lamichhane’s shoulders.

Sandeep was first appointed captain four years ago. He initially took charge in 2021 but his captaincy ended abruptly within a year following a rape allegation. CAN had assigned him the role on 29th Mangsir 2078 (December 2021) after removing Gyanendra Malla. Sandeep will captain the final series of the ICC World Cup League 2 cycle. Nepal secured a direct spot in World Cup qualifiers by winning 11 of their last 12 matches during the 2019-2023 League 2 cycle, finishing in the top four. However, even if they win the remaining four games this time, their chances of finishing in the top four are slim.

Sandeep first captained the national team at the age of 21. To date, he has played 14 ODI matches as captain, achieving four wins, nine losses, and one draw. On 21st Bhadra 2079, following a rape complaint from a woman, CAN suspended him both as captain and from the national team. The suspension was lifted on 27th Poush 2079 after the Patan High Court granted him bail. Sandeep is the first bowler from Nepal to take 100 wickets in both ODI and T20 formats. Additionally, he holds the world record for being the fastest to reach 100 and 150 ODI wickets.
