How Were the Mountains in the Himalayan Range Formed?
The formation of mountains is a story that dates back tens of millions of years. Approximately 40 to 50 million years ago, two major tectonic plates, the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, collided with each other. Because these continental plates have a lower density compared to oceanic plates, they could not easily slide beneath one another. The immense pressure generated by this collision caused Earth’s upper surface (the crust) to uplift, gradually transforming the surface into towering mountains.
Today, the Himalayan mountain range lies between the Tibetan Plateau and the Indian subcontinent, functioning much like a boundary. For more detailed information on this topic, be sure to watch this video.
