Trump Signals National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton Could Become the Administration’s New ‘AI Czar’

October 1, Kathmandu – US President Donald Trump has indicated in a conversation with Axios that National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton could become the administration’s new ‘AI czar.’ As demands grow for government control and regulation in the AI sector, Trump is searching for the right person to lead this effort. Commenting on who might take the AI leadership role, Trump said, ‘I have someone in mind,’ pointing toward Jay Clayton. He added, ‘Clayton is a good person, he’s available, and it would be a good idea.’

Speaking with reporters outside the White House, Trump expressed his desire to announce a name for the position within the next three to four days. While the exact responsibilities of the ‘AI czar’ remain to be clearly defined, Trump has already shared plans to establish a new government body called the ‘AI Force.’

Jay Clayton, who oversees 18 intelligence agencies, serves as President Trump’s chief intelligence advisor. During a congressional hearing last July, Clayton echoed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s view by stating that AI poses not only opportunities but also significant threats to the intelligence community. Discussions have taken place involving Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and senior officials from AI companies on balancing AI innovation with security concerns. The meeting included talks about encouraging companies to regulate themselves and each other. Previously, Silicon Valley investor David Sacks had fulfilled the role of ‘AI czar.’ After his special government position ended last March, he stepped down from that responsibility but has continued to influence as an external advisor.
