How to Keep Your Neck Straight: ‘The Spine Needs Movement’

The modern era presents significant challenges for our necks. Millions of people worldwide are forced to maintain poor posture for extended periods throughout the day. When using laptops or mobile phones, the neck bears a considerable amount of the body’s weight. According to Anthony Ghosh, a spinal neurosurgeon at Queen’s Hospital in London, tilting the head due to neck discomfort can cause the neck to bear approximately 27.2 kilograms of weight. Under normal circumstances, the neck supports about 5.4 kilograms of the head’s weight.

Modern lifestyles put tremendous pressure on the neck, but the five exercises outlined below can help maintain neck health and prevent problems at any age. The ‘flexed’ posture often adopted while using electronic devices places excessive strain on the neck muscles. Around 60 to 80 percent of people will experience neck pain at some point in their lives, and among them, about 50 percent endure daily stiffness or pain.

Ghosh recommends staying active and taking breaks from screen time. “The spine wants to move,” he said. “Movement increases blood circulation and strengthens muscles.” However, it is essential to consult a doctor before starting any new exercise routine. There are various strategies we can adopt to combat neck problems effectively.
