Men in China Falling Victim to Marriage Scams

In China, some agencies that claim to provide certified marriages to unmarried men have been found to engage in fraudulent activities. These agencies deliberately arrange meetings with women and promise quick and successful marriages. In some reported cases, the so-called ‘newlywed’ women took large sums of money from the groom and then disappeared. Furthermore, men are required to pay fees to these agencies or intermediaries.

The women introduced through these agencies may not be as represented or expected. Many of these women are found to have been married multiple times and may have children. This issue reflects a social crisis stemming from China’s controversial “one-child policy.” Due to the preference for sons, there are approximately 30 million more men than women in China.
