Iraq to Bring Armed Groups’ Weapons Under State Control Within a Month

August 24, Kathmandu – Iraq is set to begin the process of bringing weapons held by armed groups and militias under the control of the state. According to National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji, the process of weapon control will progressively advance following the withdrawal of the US-led international coalition scheduled for September 30.

Al-Araji described this decision as a “strategic Iraqi move,” emphasizing that the process will proceed through dialogue without confrontation with the armed groups. However, some militias close to Iran have expressed opposition to disarmament. Kataib Hezbollah demands the complete withdrawal of foreign forces, removal of Turkish troops from northern Iraq, and the disbandment of the Kurdish armed group, the Peshmerga.

Since the government regards armed conflict as a “red line,” Al-Araji assured that the rights and protections of fighters within armed groups will be guaranteed.
