Mental Health: When Does Everyday Stress Turn into a Serious Condition?

If you frequently find yourself uninterested in other activities, irritated by everything, and lacking the energy even to get out of bed, you might be experiencing mental health issues. How can a person recognize their mental health status, and when can stressful situations escalate into a serious illness? When should individuals facing depression, anxiety, and stress seek professional medical help, and how can we strengthen our mental well-being? We sought answers to these questions from psychologist Dr. Komalpreet Kaur.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist? Psychologists are mental health professionals who assist individuals in understanding their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They offer counseling and therapeutic support to help manage emotional challenges. On the other hand, psychiatrists are medical doctors who have the authority to prescribe medication. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. Only when a mental health disorder is severe enough does a psychiatrist recommend medication. In certain cases, psychologists and psychiatrists work together as a team.

What are some early signs that indicate a person might need psychological support? If a person has been anxious for more than two weeks, feels worried without an obvious reason, experiences excessive or insufficient sleep, or notices significant changes in appetite, these could be signs of stress or anxiety. Such symptoms may indicate mental health issues. In these situations, consulting a mental health professional is essential.

What causes mental illness or depression? Some factors depend on our genetic makeup, while others relate to our surrounding environment. For example, if someone in your family has experienced depression, you might also be affected. However, this is not always the case. Mental health conditions often result from a combination of environmental and personal circumstances. If the family environment is stressful, negative thinking patterns can develop among other members as well. It is crucial to address these factors promptly.
