Australia Launches Campaign for United Nations Security Council Membership

Australia has officially launched its campaign to become a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council for the two-year term of 2029–30. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the candidacy in New York, emphasizing roles in peace, climate, maritime security, and artificial intelligence. The UN General Assembly will hold a secret ballot in June 2028 to select temporary members of the Security Council, requiring a two-thirds majority.

Australia stated that, if elected, it will contribute to international peace and security, conflict prevention, climate and maritime security, and matters related to artificial intelligence. Albanese highlighted that conflicts and international events around the world affect Australia’s security, economy, and the daily lives of its citizens, underscoring the need for active participation in global affairs.

Australia asserts that its Security Council membership would amplify the voices of small and medium-sized countries in decision-making processes. The campaign’s slogan is ‘We Listen, We Partner, We Protect.’ The voting will take place in June 2028 to elect temporary Security Council members for the 2029–30 term.

Australia has previously served as a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council five times, most recently in 2013–14. If elected this time, Australia aims to expand its role in international peace and security and multilateral cooperation.
