Boat Capsizes on Lake Kivu in Eastern Congo, Killing 12 and Leaving Dozens Missing

At least 12 people have lost their lives and dozens more are missing after a boat carrying traders capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo. The vessel was carrying over 50 passengers, and approximately 15 individuals have been rescued safely, according to Felix Habiragi, the chief of Kisheke village.

Local administrator Pascal Muhindo Ntambuka reported that the boat was transporting fishermen and goods from Buvina to Boja on Idjwi Island. The accident occurred late Saturday night near Idjwi Island, located in South Kivu province. Habiragi confirmed that about 15 people have been rescued so far.

The cause of the accident remains unknown at this time. Boat accidents frequently result in significant human casualties in Congo. With a population exceeding 100 million, rivers and lakes serve as primary transportation routes across the country, making such accidents a recurring occurrence.
