Democratic Republic of Congo Qualifies for World Cup After 52 Years

African nation Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 52 years. On Tuesday night, DR Congo secured their spot for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, by defeating the Caribbean nation Jamaica 1-0 in the intercontinental playoff match. Axel Tuanzebe scored the decisive goal in extra time, ensuring the victory for Congo. He netted the goal in the 100th minute, giving Congo the lead that ultimately confirmed their place in the World Cup after over five decades.

DR Congo previously participated in the World Cup only once, in 1974, making this their second qualification. In the 2026 tournament, Congo will compete in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.
