Michelle Obama on Motherhood: Teaching Children to Face Challenges, Not Just Shielding Them

During a news review session, Michelle Obama expressed how becoming a mother transformed the center of her life and how she aimed to develop her daughters into responsible individuals. She discussed the challenges linked to motherhood, such as job insecurity and the necessity of fostering independence in children. Michelle highlighted that motherhood positively influenced her professional life and emphasized the importance of teaching her daughters critical thinking and skills to face adversity.

“Becoming a mother made me feel both the strongest and the most vulnerable simultaneously, something I had never anticipated before. When our daughters were born, the center of my life completely shifted. Every decision, every action, every routine, every risk revolved around one question: What kind of world will I create for them?” she added.

“I wanted my daughters to grow up confident, embracing themselves as they are. They are intelligent, self-reliant, disciplined, sensitive, and courageous. I do not want to use fame or the role in the White House to make my children special or to shield them from responsibility.”

“Being a parent means preparing a child to become independent and capable. It is painful because children no longer belong to you entirely. They develop their own identity,” she shared, discussing the challenges and experiences of motherhood. “I am confident that mothers shape not only their families but the emotional culture as well.”
