Scenic Views Along the Riversides of Kathmandu Valley

May 16, Kathmandu – Formerly known for pollution and unpleasant odors, the riversides of Kathmandu are now evolving into attractive urban tourist destinations. Particularly, the Shankhamul area along the Bagmati River has been transformed with the establishment of the ‘Shankhamul Yoga Park’ and surrounding green spaces, offering valley residents an opportunity to embrace a new lifestyle. The expansive greenery, flowing Bagmati River, and well-organized walking paths have made these areas popular choices for morning and evening walks, yoga practice, and family picnics.

The parks are equipped with modern playgrounds and slides designed for children, encouraging them to enjoy the open air and stay away from mobile devices and gadgets. For younger generations and health-conscious citizens, outdoor fitness facilities are also provided, promoting healthier living habits. The Shankhamul area holds religious significance as well. Yoga classes and sattras, conducted with active participation from the Art of Living organization and the local community, offer visitors mental peace and spiritual wellbeing.

Locals note that practicing yoga and meditation while sitting on the lush green grass offers a temporary escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. These riverside parks in Kathmandu not only enhance urban beauty but also contribute positively to environmental conservation and mental health. There is a growing demand among residents to expand such riverside development initiatives to other parts of the valley. Photos by Anup Pradhan/News Agency Nepal
