Community Dog Rescued After Suffering Stab Wounds in Thali, Kathmandu

In Thali, Kathmandu’s Tamang Tole, a community dog was violently attacked with a sharp weapon, leaving it seriously injured. The incident, which occurred on May 16, has gained widespread attention on social media. The dog was reportedly slashed with a khukuri or another sharp instrument.

Neha Gurung shared photos and videos of the injured dog online, appealing for help. According to Srijana Thakuri, who has taken charge of the rescue and is preparing for the dog’s medical treatment, the animal sustained deep wounds on various parts of its body. She explained that the dog was likely attacked suddenly while lying down, with strikes aimed at its armpits and legs.

Srijana further stated that authorities are investigating the attack by collecting CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify the perpetrator. She also noted that incidents of animal abuse have been common in the area; recently, another dog was struck with a rod.

Under Chapter 27 of the Muluki Ain 2074 (National Code), animal protection laws are clearly defined. Section 290 of the code prohibits acts of cruelty such as beating, overburdening, forcing sick animals to work, feeding harmful substances, or otherwise tormenting animals. Violators face punishment of up to three months imprisonment, a fine of up to NPR 5,000, or both. Section 289 stipulates that killing an animal carries a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment, while causing bodily harm may result in up to six months in jail.
