Mahanta Thakur Raises Concerns Over Chure Exploitation and Budget Implementation Efficiency in Madhesh

Mahanta Thakur, the patron of the People’s Socialist Party, has raised serious concerns regarding the exploitation of the Chure hills and the effectiveness of budget implementation in the Madhesh region. He highlighted that excessive extraction of natural resources has led to erosion and flooding issues during the rainy season, which state authorities have failed to adequately address. Kathmandu, 18 May.

During a meeting of the Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance Committee under the National Assembly on Monday, Chairman Thakur presented his views, noting that although development plans exist, adverse conditions are still prevalent in practice. He informed the committee that uncontrolled exploitation of the Chure and surrounding plains has brought a major crisis to Madhesh.

According to him, the overuse of natural resources has caused severe problems with erosion to the north and flooding to the south during the monsoon. Despite villages being submerged for months, the relevant government bodies have not provided the necessary attention, prompting his dissatisfaction.

Chairman Thakur also criticized the budget allocation and expenditure process for lacking transparency. He stated, “We are discussing the destruction of the Chure hills, but the extraction of stones, soil, and sand continues unabated. Development plans should not remain confined to paper but must be implemented in a way that the public can experience their benefits,” he emphasized.
