Aston Villa Wins Europa League Football Title
English club Aston Villa ended a 30-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League football title. Aston Villa convincingly defeated German club Freiburg 3-0 at Besiktas Park in Istanbul. This victory marked the fifth Europa League title for head coach Unai Emery. (May 21, Kathmandu)
Aston Villa had not won any trophy since their 1996 Football League Cup triumph. At the European level, this is their first title in 44 years, having last won the European Cup in 1982. In the first half of the match, Aston Villa strengthened their control by scoring two goals. In the 41st minute, Yuri Tielemans opened the scoring for the team.
During injury time of the first half, Emiliano Buendia scored an impressive goal to double the lead. In the 58th minute of the second half, Morgan Rogers added a third goal, securing Aston Villa’s victory. Throughout the game, Aston Villa maintained constant pressure. Although Amadou Onana’s shot hit the post and Buendia missed another opportunity, the win was never in doubt.
Since taking over as head coach in November 2022, Unai Emery has overseen a remarkable improvement in Aston Villa’s performance. The club’s last major trophy was the 1996 League Cup, making this the first major title they have achieved in nearly three decades.
