Aran Rai Emphasizes the Need for Inclusive Film Production in Proposed Cinema Bill

Member of Parliament Aran Rai stressed the importance of prioritizing inclusive film production while discussing the proposed Cinema Bill. He advocated that the leadership of the Central Film Committee should be held by film professionals with at least 15 years of experience and that the committee should be granted autonomy. Rai also highlighted the challenges faced by filmmakers aiming to create language and culturally significant films due to lack of investment.

During today’s meeting of the House of Representatives in Kathmandu, while deliberating on the Cinema Bill 2079 (2082) presented by the National Assembly, he stated, “A law should be enacted to give special priority to inclusive films.” He emphasized the necessity of having experienced film professionals in leadership positions within the Central Film Committee.

MP Rai further stressed the need to reconsider the current regulation that leadership roles in the committee be limited to government employees. He agreed with the proposition to grant autonomy to the Film Development Board, saying, “It is appropriate to give the board autonomy.” Additionally, he suggested including provisions in the regulations to ensure that the appointment of the chairperson and members is made in accordance with decisions by the Council of Ministers.

Rai underscored the need to prioritize films based on language and cultural heritage, adding, “We produce language and cultural films, but financial support is lacking, which poses challenges.”
