China’s Military Pressure and Trump’s ‘Out of the Box’ Approach
Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s diplomatic representative to the United States, has been using various references from Western pop culture to help American citizens understand his country’s geopolitical crisis. He described the possibility of a direct phone call between US President Donald Trump and Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te as diplomatically justifiable. Although Trump used the $1.4 billion arms deal as a negotiating chip in talks with China, Yui emphasized that Taiwan remains confident in the strong support it receives from the US Congress.
In Washington, D.C., Yui is currently very active in political circles. Since Trump hinted that the $1.4 billion arms sale to Taiwan could be used as leverage in negotiations with China, Yui has taken a frontline role in defending Taiwan’s security sensitivities. His main challenge now is to ensure the US administration does not yield to Beijing’s pressure and remains firmly committed to Taiwan.
For much of his tenure, Yui worked behind the scenes to secure bipartisan support in the US. However, following the recent bilateral summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, his position has shifted dramatically. He has begun to appear more publicly, strongly advocating for Taiwan. He has argued that selling arms to Taiwan is not a burden for the US but rather a wise investment.
To engage with the American public, Yui has drawn on familiar Hollywood and Western pop culture references. He compared Taiwan’s complex international status to the magical school Hogwarts from the popular novel series “Harry Potter.” Nonetheless, he remains optimistic as increasing numbers of people worldwide are beginning to better understand Taiwan’s geography and democratic character. Trump’s history reveals little regard for the diplomatic protocols and established traditions that have governed Taiwan-related matters for decades. Should a phone call occur between Trump and the Taiwanese president, it would mark a historic moment breaking longstanding precedent.
