Jordan and Algeria Face Off in Quest for First Win at FIFA World Cup 2026
After defeats in their opening matches, the upcoming game between Jordan and Algeria will feel like a knockout encounter for both teams. A loss here could mean elimination from the tournament. The match, part of FIFA World Cup 2026, will take place in San Francisco, USA, starting at 8:45 AM Nepal Time on Tuesday. Both teams, eager to secure their first victory after initial setbacks, will battle intensely as the losing side risks exiting the competition.
Algerian coach Vladimir Petkovic emphasized the significance of the match, stating, “This game is extremely important for both teams, and the pressure is equally intense.” On 22 June, as reported from Kathmandu, both Jordan and Algeria will aim for their first win in Group J at San Francisco’s Bay Arena Stadium, kicking off at 8:45 AM Nepal Time on Tuesday.
Both teams suffered losses in their World Cup openers and are now seeking to claim their first victory. Given the stakes, this match carries knockout-like importance; a defeat could lead to elimination. Naturally, neither team wants to be defeated. As a debutant Asian nation in this World Cup, Jordan lost 4-1 to Norway in their opening match but achieved the milestone of scoring their first-ever World Cup goal.
Jordan’s Ali Alwan scored against Austria, marking a historic moment for the team. Meanwhile, Algeria, returning to the World Cup after 12 years, faced a 3-0 defeat against former champions Argentina, where Argentine captain Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick. Jordan’s coach Jamal Sellami highlighted the challenge ahead: “We anticipate a crucial and tough game against our Algerian rivals, a strong and remarkable team,” he said.
Similarly, Algerian coach Vladimir Petkovic underscored the decisive nature of the encounter. “This match is of utmost importance for both sides, and the pressure is equally intense,” said the 63-year-old. “Jordan is a highly organized team that consistently performs at a high level and demonstrates strong physical prowess on the field,” he added. This will be the first World Cup game between Jordan and Algeria. Previously, they played a friendly match once in 2004, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Jordan’s key players include Ali Alwan, who scored in the opener against Austria, and Mousa Al-Tamari from French club Rennes. For Algeria, watch for Riyad Mahrez alongside promising young talents Ibrahim Maza, aged 20, and Rayane Aït-Nouri.
