Cristiano Ronaldo Expected to End Goal Drought in Portugal vs Uzbekistan Match

In Group ‘K’ of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the formidable European football team Portugal faces Asian debutants Uzbekistan today. Portugal, contenders for the title, are under significant pressure following a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match. Coach Roberto Martinez’s side managed only a single accurate shot on target against Congo. If the same lackluster performance is repeated today, Portugal may face even greater challenges against the strong Colombia team in their final game.

On the other hand, Uzbekistan, defeated by Colombia in their first match, has studied Congo’s disciplined defensive strategy against Portugal and is looking to secure their first historic point on the world stage. The main focus of today’s match will be on any strategic changes implemented among Portugal’s world-class players and whether 41-year-old captain Cristiano Ronaldo can finally break his long goal drought. Ronaldo has now gone 10 consecutive major international tournaments (World Cup and Euro Cup games) without scoring. However, he has still found the net in six of Portugal’s last nine international matches. If the veteran captain fails to score again today, further questions may arise regarding coach Martinez’s tactical decisions.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Portugal and Uzbekistan in international football. They have no prior friendly or official matches against each other. Uzbekistan, making their World Cup debut under Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro, is pursuing its first victory or point in the tournament. Portugal traditionally holds a strong record against Asian teams, but Uzbekistan’s resilience should not be underestimated.
