Canada and Switzerland on the Verge of Knockout Stage, Qatar and Bosnia Seek First Win

These two matches will determine which teams advance to the knockout stage and which teams end their World Cup journey.

June 23, Kathmandu – The final round of group stage matches for the FIFA World Cup 2026 begins today. Matches within the same group will be played simultaneously. The first matches will be from Group B, with Switzerland facing Canada at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver at 12:45 AM.

At the same time, Qatar will compete against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Seattle Stadium. These two matches will decide which teams advance to the knockout stage and which will be eliminated.

So far, no team from this group has secured a place in the knockout rounds. These games will determine the fate of all four teams. Canada and Switzerland, having played two games each, both hold 4 points with one win and one draw. Meanwhile, Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina have each earned only 1 point from a draw and a loss.

Canada recorded a dominant 6-0 victory against Qatar and a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Switzerland drew 1-1 with Qatar and won 4-1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

With Canada and Switzerland close to qualifying, the chances of Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina advancing are slim. The winner of tonight’s match between Canada and Switzerland will top the group and secure direct entry into the knockout stage. The losing team will still have a chance to advance, and a draw will see both teams progress.

In the other group match, Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina, both without a win so far, will face off. A victory is necessary for either team to maintain even a remote chance of progressing to the knockout rounds. The loser will be automatically eliminated, while the winner will strengthen their prospects.

History in the Making for Co-Host Canada

Co-host Canada has never advanced to the knockout stages in FIFA World Cup history. However, playing at home, they now have the opportunity to make history by securing at least a draw against Switzerland in their final group game.

After drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening match, Canada made headlines with a commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar. Despite this, defeating Switzerland will be a tough challenge.

Switzerland, having reached the Round of 16 in the last three consecutive World Cups, is also eager to continue their streak in 2026. They have drawn 1-1 with Qatar and defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, aiming to secure advancement in the final match with either a win or a draw.

Even with a loss in this match, both teams could still qualify depending on other results. This will be their first encounter in 24 years, the only previous meeting being in 2002 when Canada beat Switzerland 3-1.

First-Time Knockout Stage Aspirants

In Group B, winless Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar face off with hopes to reach the knockout stage for the first time. Neither nation has previously competed against each other in the FIFA World Cup.

Bosnia and Herzegovina drew 1-1 with Canada in their opener but lost 4-1 to Switzerland, surrendering control late in the match.

Qatar held Switzerland to a late 1-1 draw in their opener but suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Canada in their second match. Both teams must win to keep their World Cup hopes alive, while also requiring favorable results from the other game. Even a win will likely place the victorious side in third place, but still with a chance to qualify.

This is the second World Cup appearance for both teams. Bosnia and Herzegovina made their debut in 2014 but exited in the group stage, while Qatar, as hosts in 2022, were also eliminated early.
