Qualified Teams by Continent for FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 and Match Schedule Revealed
With the conclusion of the group stage in the FIFA World Cup 2026 being hosted by three North American countries, the lineup for the Round of 32 has been finalized. Marking a historic first, 48 nations participated in this World Cup edition, with a total of 72 matches played. Thirty-two teams have secured their places in the knockout phase. The host nations – the United States, Mexico, and Canada – have all advanced to the knockout stage, while former champions Uruguay were eliminated in the group stage.
As of June 14 in Kathmandu, the FIFA World Cup 2026, held across the three North American nations—USA, Mexico, and Canada—has finalized which teams will compete in the Round of 32. Following morning matches featuring Argentina vs. Jordan and Austria vs. Algeria, the full list of 32 teams qualified for the knockout round has been confirmed. This edition has seen an unprecedented 72 matches in the group phase. The knockout stage includes winners and runners-up from 12 groups, as well as the eight best third-placed teams, totaling 32 teams entering the elimination rounds.
The Round of 32 is a newly introduced first knockout round in this expanded format. Traditionally strong contenders such as the reigning champions Argentina, runners-up France, former champions Brazil, Spain, Germany, England, as well as title contenders Portugal and the Netherlands, have all advanced to this stage. However, two-time winners Uruguay have exited without a single win in the group stage. This World Cup also features four debutant teams, among which Cape Verde has progressed to the knockout stage, while the other three newcomers were eliminated in the group phase.
The distribution of qualified teams by continent is as follows: Europe – 13, Africa – 9, South America – 5, North America – 3, and Asia – 2. The first knockout match will take place on Monday morning between South Africa and co-host Canada. Winners of the Round of 32 will advance to the Round of 16; losing teams will be immediately eliminated, making every match as critical as a final.
