Egypt Advances to Round of 16 for the First Time After Defeating Australia in Penalty Shootout
At Dallas Stadium in Texas, USA, Egypt secured their place in the Round of 16 by defeating Australia 4–2 in a penalty shootout. On June 20, Kathmandu time, Egypt reached the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup for the first time. In the shootout, Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Hearnington failed to score, which handed Egypt the victory.
In the 13th minute of the match, Imam Ashour scored to give Egypt an early lead. However, in the 55th minute, after Egypt’s Mohammed Hany’s header was cleared off the line, the ball was accidentally deflected into Egypt’s own goal, allowing Australia to equalize. The regular time ended in a 1–1 draw, leading the game into extra time. With no goals scored during extra time, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.
Competing in their fourth World Cup, Egypt has reached the Round of 16 for the first time, having previously been eliminated in the group stages. Egypt’s next challenge will be on July 7 in Atlanta, where they will face the winner of the match between defending champion Argentina and Cape Verde in the Round of 16.
