Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz: US Responds Firmly to Iranian Attacks
Following attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States has issued a series of coordinated and forceful responses targeting Iran. The US Central Command described the strikes launched Tuesday as a strong reaction to attacks on commercial vessels carrying innocent passengers in international waters. Iran’s deputy foreign minister warned that Tehran would take decisive measures, accusing the US action of violating last month’s US-Iran agreement.
According to Iranian state media, the US military targeted areas including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, and Sirik, injuring some but causing no confirmed loss of life. The United States categorically denied responsibility for the initial attacks on the tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement released late Tuesday, Central Command said the US strikes were in direct response to Iranian aggression, describing Iran’s actions as “unnecessary, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.”
Earlier, the US Treasury Department had reversed a temporary lifting of oil sanctions on Iran. The licenses permitting Iran to sell oil and petroleum products were issued under the terms of the US-Iran agreement. Iran’s foreign ministry condemned this decision as a violation of the agreement, characterizing it as evidence of US bad faith and irresponsible conduct. Tehran reiterated its commitment to taking all necessary steps to protect its national interests and security.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar have condemned Iran over attacks on their tankers in the strait. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majid Al Ansari held Iran fully responsible for the attack on the Al-Rukayat vessel. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry also reported attacks on its tankers, labeling these acts as disruptions to the international waterway and global energy supply.
