Manipur Farmer Killed in Militant Attack, Two Arrested

A 53-year-old tribal farmer, Haolal Singsit, was shot dead on the spot by suspected militants on Saturday in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, India. Police officials stated, “Haolal was working in his field on Saturday when armed attackers opened fire on him,” resulting in his death at the scene.

Two individuals have been arrested for their alleged involvement in arson and violent incidents in Kanto Sabl village, and further investigations are ongoing. On 28 Ashar, Kathmandu. The deceased farmer was working in a paddy field alongside his wife. Kangpokpi police have identified the victim as Haolal Singsit from Govajang village.

One police officer said, “While Haolal was working in the field on Saturday, armed attackers shot him. After sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, he died at the scene. His wife was present during the attack but managed to escape safely.”

Authorities have registered a case related to this incident, and security forces are conducting a search for the assailants. Govajang is the last village of the Kuki community located in the Twilang area of Kangpokpi district, and a climate of fear has spread there following the incident. Meanwhile, a few houses belonging to the Meitei community were set on fire around 2 pm on Saturday.

Following the violence and attempted arson in vacant houses in Kanto Sabl village, Kangpokpi police have initiated action. A joint team comprising Manipur Police, CRPF, RAF, and Army has arrested two individuals. Those detained include 65-year-old Kammang Lhovam, the president of the Limakhong Area Protection Committee and head of Hengjang village, and 30-year-old Paigin Hengshing from Khunkho Kuki village.

Police released a statement on social media platform X, confirming ongoing efforts to identify and arrest other involved parties.
