Exiled Bangladeshi Writer Taslima Nasreen to Return to Kolkata Next Month

June 14, Kathmandu – Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen is set to return to Kolkata next month. She was forced to leave Kolkata nearly two decades ago following violent backlash against her writings. According to news agency PTI, her return holds political significance as well. The BJP government in West Bengal is presenting it as a sign of change from what they describe as a longstanding bias toward religious fundamentalism.

Taslima Nasreen herself announced this update on social media. She will participate in a literary event scheduled for August 1 at Rabindra Sadan in Kolkata. She plans to recite poetry at the event, which is organized by secular and anti-extremism groups. The program is considered highly significant not only for literature but also for broader political and social issues. Nasreen has been living outside Bangladesh since 1994 after threats from extremist groups.
