Trump Threatens New Tariffs on Canada Over Forest Management Negligence

August 18, Kathmandu – US President Donald Trump has accused Canada of failing to properly manage its forests and has threatened to impose new tariffs. He stated that Canada’s negligence in forest management has resulted in polluted air affecting the United States.

Holding Canada accountable, Trump warned that new tariffs would be levied due to the issue. “We hold Canada responsible for not taking proper care of its forests,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This negligence is causing dirty, polluted, and harmful air to enter the United States. The air quality is dangerous and unacceptable.” He also announced plans to discuss the matter with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney soon and seek answers.

“This is a deliberate negligence that has started recurring every year. It is causing billions of dollars in economic damage to the US. The cost of this pollution damage must be assessed and added to the tariffs imposed on Canada,” Trump said. At that time, hundreds of forest fires had broken out across Canada, and the resulting smoke was impacting large areas of North America. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized the shared responsibility between Canada and the US in addressing climate change.

Following Trump’s statements, Canada’s Emergency Management Ministers expressed commitment to ongoing communication between the two countries for natural disaster management. They highlighted the long history of cooperation, recalling the 1982 Fire Control Agreement and the disaster assistance accord reached at the 2025 G-7 Summit.
