Nine Workers Die in Tunnel Collapse at Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim, India

Nine workers have died following the collapse of a tunnel at an under-construction hydroelectric project in Sikkim, India. Currently, 15 workers remain trapped inside the tunnel, with specialized rescue teams deployed to retrieve them. Rajiv Roka, Director of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, reported that the presence of toxic methane gas is complicating rescue efforts.

The accident occurred on Monday during construction work on a government hydroelectric project tunnel at the Teesta River. At the time of the collapse, laborers were engaged in tunnel construction. Initial estimates suggested between 25 and 27 workers were trapped inside; so far, nine bodies have been recovered. Authorities believe 15 workers are still inside the tunnel, and rescue operations continue.

Preliminary investigations indicate that an explosion may have caused the tunnel to collapse, but the exact cause remains unclear. Since the accident happened deep within the tunnel, officials have noted that the investigation is challenging. In addition, heavy monsoon rains in the area over the past few days are believed to have possibly contributed to the incident.

The most significant obstacle in the rescue operation is the presence of toxic methane gas emanating from rocks inside the tunnel. Only rescue teams equipped with oxygen cylinders and specialized gear are permitted to enter the tunnel. Rajiv Roka stated that despite the high concentration of gas complicating the operation, rescue efforts are proceeding rapidly. Expert teams with experience in mine accident rescues have also been deployed.
