Concerns Arise Over Investigation Into Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Family Following His Announcement to Return to Nepal

Following the announcement by former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, currently abroad, that he intends to return to Nepal, there is growing concern about the direction of ongoing money laundering investigations involving him and several members of his family in Nepal. The Director General of the Money Laundering Investigation Department has expressed an inability to provide direct comments on the status of the investigations.

In the month of Chaitra, based on recommendations from the Money Laundering Investigation Department, the Kathmandu District Court had granted permission to arrest Deuba and his spouse for investigation purposes. However, this arrest warrant was subsequently revoked by the Supreme Court, and officials have yet to provide clear updates on the progress of the investigations. In a statement issued on Tuesday, commemorating the VP Memorial Day, Deuba expressed his unwavering faith and dedication to the democratic awareness, patriotism, and trust in justice of the Nepali people, alongside his desire to return to Nepal.

The decision to return home has sparked diverse reactions. In recent months, both the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and the Money Laundering Investigation Department have been probing allegations involving Deuba and some of his family members who were victims of assault during the Janjati Movement protests. Nepal Police attempted to issue Interpol arrest warrants against Deuba and his wife but were unsuccessful, leading the Supreme Court to invalidate the district court’s approval for the arrest.

Nirmal Dhakal, Director General of the Money Laundering Investigation Department, stated, “We are currently not in a position to provide precise comments on this matter. It would not be appropriate to discuss the investigation.” Despite being abroad for medical treatment, Deuba had indicated his willingness to be present when required. In his recent statement, he mentioned that he is preparing to return to Nepal soon, with a focus on both party unity and national unity.
