The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has reported revenue of NPR 9.21 crore from the second season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), a key initiative to strengthen the organization’s financial base.
This figure is nearly NPR 7 crore more than the income generated from the inaugural season.
Recognizing that cricket development is not possible without financial stability, CAN has effectively launched the franchise-based NPL, a globally recognized source of income, and has seen success from this approach.
Prior to starting the competition, CAN had stated that a portion of the revenue would be invested in empowering district and provincial cricket associations and funding various cricket development programs.
Besides support from the International Cricket Council (ICC), CAN’s main internal sources of income include the NPL, ticket sales during international cricket events, and sponsorships.
Moving forward, CAN sees potential to increase earnings from upcoming editions of the NPL.
From the first season’s earnings, CAN had distributed NPR 7 million to provincial cricket bodies.
It has also publicly disclosed an income of NPR 9,21,21,335 from the second season.
CAN spokesperson Chumbi Lama stated, “The income is dedicated to cricket development programs.
Last year only a small amount was distributed to provincial cricket. Decisions on this year’s distribution are yet to be finalized. However, plans include sharing income with district associations, the backbone of cricket development,” he added.

According to the CAN press release, the total collection in the second NPL season was NPR 47.36 crore.
In the first season, CAN had reported total income of NPR 27.69 crore.
Expenditure for the second season stood at NPR 21.96 crore, compared to NPR 20.15 crore in the first season.
Franchise teams felt some relief this time, as all eight teams that participated last year earned a profit of about NPR 54 lakh, receiving over NPR 2 crore individually this season.

However, a quorum of nine members was present at a meeting held on Monday, allowing it to proceed.
CAN’s 17-member executive committee had eight members absent during the meeting.

Annual Budget of NPR 7.6 Crore for Women’s Cricket
The NPL revenue has also brought positive news for women’s cricket.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to allocate an annual budget of USD 500,000, approximately NPR 7.6 crore, for the development of women’s cricket in Nepal.
This budget, received by CAN from the ICC, will be utilized exclusively for women’s cricket development programs.
After a long period of budget constraints that stalled activities, this marks the largest investment in Nepali women’s cricket to date.
It is expected to bring significant progress to the development of women’s cricket.
