Germany’s coach Julian Nagelsmann resigns following poor World Cup performance

A few days after Germany’s exit from the World Cup, coach Julian Nagelsmann announced his resignation through an official statement. 19 June, Kathmandu. Following Germany’s disappointing performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down from his position as head coach. Shortly after the team was eliminated, he released a statement confirming his decision to resign. Germany was knocked out after losing to Paraguay in the Round of 32 penalty shootout. During the group stage, Germany defeated Curaçao 7–1 and Ivory Coast 2–1 but were eliminated after a 2–1 loss to Ecuador.

In his statement, Nagelsmann said, “In the days following our exit from the tournament, I reflected deeply and consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation. This decision was by no means easy for me. My primary focus has always been the success of the team. After such a disappointing outcome, the players deserve the opportunity to start anew.” Nagelsmann is the sixth coach to resign after a World Cup elimination. He was appointed as Germany’s head coach in September 2023, succeeding Hansi Flick. Under his leadership, Germany reached the quarterfinals of UEFA Euro 2024, held on home soil, and the semifinals of the 2025 UEFA Nations League. Alongside Nagelsmann, assistant coaches Benjamin Gluck and Benjamin Hübner also decided to leave the team.
