English Premier League: Can Arsenal Successfully Defend Their Title?

After a long wait, Arsenal clinched the title last season. This season, they must defend that title – marking the first time since the 2004-05 season that they will attempt to do so. The ‘Gunners’ remain one of the frontrunners to win the championship again, but history shows that defending the title is a challenging task. The difficulty in defending a title can largely be attributed to psychological factors. This challenge was dramatically evident for Leicester City, who won the league in the 2015-16 season. The following season, not only did they fail to defend their title, but they also struggled to remain in the Premier League. A Leicester player told The Guardian: “Winning the title is like reaching the summit of Everest; on the way back, there is pain, and a new climb must begin.” Former Premier League player Andros Townsend has said that it is difficult for Arsenal to maintain consistently high performances. “When Liverpool won the title twice, they couldn’t defend it the second season and their form weakened,” he said on Radio Live. “Winning the title brings relief, but maintaining the mental state to repeat the success is tough.”

There have been changes among Arsenal’s rival teams. Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea will compete under new managers. Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United’s manager will lead their teams through their first full seasons following background changes. Therefore, there is some uncertainty in those squads, while Arsenal is likely to benefit from stability under Mikel Arteta. Manchester City will open their campaign at home against Bournemouth, followed by a match against Crystal Palace. Later, they will face Coventry, Manchester United, and Sunderland. The Premier League season begins on August 22 (Nepal time), with Arsenal playing against Coventry City in the opening match.
