Uncertainty Remains Over Xi Jinping’s Participation in BRICS Summit

The participation of Chinese President Xi Jinping in the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi remains unclear, with China yet to provide a definitive answer. Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized China’s strong commitment to BRICS cooperation and expressed support for India’s efforts to ensure a successful summit. When asked who would represent China at the summit, Mao Ning stated, “I currently have no information to share regarding your question.”

As of September 8 in Kathmandu, uncertainty persists surrounding Xi Jinping’s attendance at the upcoming BRICS Summit. According to China’s state media, Global Times, Mao Ning reiterated China’s high regard for BRICS collaboration and outlined Beijing’s backing of India’s endeavors to host the leaders’ meeting successfully this year.

During a briefing, Mao Ning was asked both about China’s expected representation at the New Delhi summit and its broader expectations for the event. In response, she said, “I have no information to share on this question at present.” Her comments come amid ongoing speculation about a potential visit by Xi Jinping to India.

To date, China has not clarified who will officially represent the country at the 18th BRICS Summit.
