The Nobel Committee has announced that this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature will be awarded to Canadian poet N. Carson.

The committee recognizes Carson for “her courageous and innovative works that create new forms in contemporary literature through a vibrant dialogue with classical traditions.”

Carson was born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada. In 1981, she published her doctoral thesis on classical literature. Alongside her poetry writing, she has worked as a translator and taught at various universities.

She is the nineteenth woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

During the 1990s, Carson published numerous remarkable works. Among them, the 1995 book Glass, Iron, and God includes “The Glass Essay,” which dissolves genre boundaries and explores the possibilities and strengths of the long poem.
