Seoul Temperature to Reach 39°C Amid Heatwave; Over 20 Deaths Reported

A severe heatwave in South Korea has resulted in over 20 deaths so far. President Lee Jae-myung has ordered the deployment of all available personnel and resources to bring the situation under control. Due to the intense heat, the Korea Baseball Organization has canceled all 10 games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

July 5, Kathmandu – South Korea is currently experiencing an extreme heatwave, with temperatures in the capital Seoul expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius on Thursday. This unprecedented heat has already claimed more than 20 lives. Addressing a heatwave-related meeting on Thursday, President Lee Jae-myung stated, “The extreme heat, at levels we have never experienced before, is rising day by day. What was once seen only in foreign news has now become our reality.”

President Lee directed ministries and local governments to mobilize all available manpower and resources until the situation stabilizes. He emphasized the importance of protecting citizens’ lives, ensuring the safety of vulnerable residents, and strictly enforcing rest periods for outdoor workers. The projected temperature approaches the historic record of 39.6 degrees Celsius set in August 2018.

Meteorologists report that Seoul is facing some of its hottest days in modern history. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, nighttime temperatures in some areas have not dropped below 30 degrees Celsius. To escape the heat, many people are seeking refuge in rivers, department stores, and air-conditioned facilities. The Korea Baseball Organization canceled all 10 games on Wednesday and Thursday after several spectators fainted due to the heat, including one incident during a game in Incheon. Although Typhoon Dolphin poses no direct threat to South Korea, it has contributed to rising temperatures by strengthening easterly winds, which carry hot, dry air over the western regions, intensifying the heat in Seoul and other areas.
