March 21, Kathmandu: The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to establish a separate desk at Tribhuvan International Airport for foreign nationals of Nepali origin and Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs).
The Immigration Department issued a letter on Sunday instructing the airport office to manage this dedicated desk. Henceforth, regardless of their country of citizenship, Nepali-origin individuals will not be required to wait in the foreign nationals’ immigration counters.
“To deepen the affection for the Nepali language, culture, and homeland among Non-Resident Nepalis and foreign nationals of Nepali origin living worldwide, and to encourage tourism and investment in Nepal, it has been decided to arrange a separate desk in arrival and departure areas for these groups,” the letter from the Immigration Department states.
Officials from the Association of Nepali Origin (ANO) had met Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal about ten days ago to request the establishment of such a desk.
“Regardless of the country they reside in or their citizenship, people of Nepali origin express profound love and respect for their motherland and ancestral land,” the ANO had said when making the request. “It is asked that the Nepal government show this respect by establishing a dedicated desk for their arrivals and departures.”
Addressing this demand, Minister Aryal has approved the desk’s establishment through a ministerial decision.
“Until now, Nepal has not been able to provide special recognition to citizens of Nepali origin in various ways, but the decision made by the Home Ministry and Minister Aryal on Sunday has instilled a sense of respect among Nepali-origin people worldwide,” stated a press release issued by ANO chairman Dilli Adhikari. “We believe that implementing this decision will make a positive contribution to the ANO’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the bond between Nepal and its global Nepali-origin community.”
