Luis Diaz: Colombia’s Key Hope for the 2026 World Cup
Colombia will compete in Group K of the FIFA World Cup 2026 alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and DR Congo. After missing out on the 2022 World Cup, winger Luis Diaz is set to make his debut in the tournament. Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany praised Diaz’s abilities, stating, ‘He has a chaotic style of creativity.’
Kathmandu, June 3. Colombia is preparing to take the field in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a strong team led by the outstanding performance of Luis Diaz. Aiming to surpass their successful run to the quarterfinals at the 2014 Brazil World Cup, Colombia will face Portugal, Uzbekistan, and DR Congo in Group K.
29-year-old Diaz has achieved success throughout his career, starting from his domestic club Junior, moving onto FC Porto in Portugal, then Liverpool in England, and most recently Bayern Munich in Germany. Born in Barrancas, Diaz’s exceptional dribbling skills and aggressive style of play attracted scouts since his teenage years. He has won the Copa Colombia, Colombian Superliga, and two league titles with Junior.
At Porto, Diaz established himself by playing 125 matches and scoring 41 goals, contributing to two Primeira Liga titles, two Taça de Portugal trophies, and a domestic Super Cup. Thanks to his impressive performances, Liverpool signed him for a significant fee in January 2022. At Anfield, he formed excellent partnerships with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Cody Gakpo, and the late Diogo Jota.
Although injuries kept him off the field for much of the 2022/23 season, Diaz played a vital role in Liverpool’s Premier League title campaign in 2024/25. In July 2025, the German club Bayern Munich signed him, and within a month, he helped them win the German Super Cup. By the international break in March 2026, Diaz had played 38 matches across all competitions, scoring 22 goals and providing 18 assists.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany commented on Diaz, ‘He possesses a chaotic creativity. When he reaches the final third, he doesn’t overthink, plays instinctively, and constantly tries to outwit opponents. Trying to stop Lucho (Diaz) often feels like the attack is over, but suddenly he scores, sprints away, or wins a foul. That’s why he is such a dangerous player.’
Colombia captain James Rodriguez also praised Diaz, saying, ‘I know him very well; he has a humble character and harbors big ambitions to win major titles. I hope to see many more such Luchos in the future.’
Diaz was the joint top scorer at Copa America 2021, scoring four goals alongside Lionel Messi. In the World Cup qualifiers, he scored seven goals, making him the second highest scorer in the South American qualifying phase. Diaz has netted 21 goals in 71 international appearances, making him Colombia’s fourth all-time top scorer. Radamel Falcao leads the list with 36 goals, followed by James Rodriguez with 31, and Arnoldo Iguarán with 25.
This will be Diaz’s first World Cup, as Colombia failed to qualify for the 2022 edition. With a stable squad, experienced players, and a clear strategy, Colombia is viewed as a strong team in this tournament. Diaz’s versatility, ability to deliver decisive performances, and high football intelligence are expected to be the cornerstone of Colombia’s success.
