Nine Teams Automatically Qualify for the 2028 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

The top eight teams from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, along with host Pakistan, have secured their places for the 2028 tournament. From Group A, Australia, India, South Africa, and Bangladesh have qualified directly, while from Group B, England, West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka have also secured their spots. The remaining teams will be determined based on the ICC rankings as of July 6, 2026. Rankings will also be the criteria for the Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka.

On June 26, Kathmandu — The ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England has seen the top four teams from both groups, plus host Pakistan, confirm their participation for the 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup. Group A’s Australia, India, South Africa, and Bangladesh have guaranteed their spots for the next edition. Similarly, Group B’s England, West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka have qualified directly.
Although Pakistan placed fifth in Group B, as the host nation for the 2028 World Cup, it automatically qualifies for the tournament despite winning only one of its five matches in this edition. Scotland lost to Sri Lanka on Friday, eliminating their chance of direct qualification.

With a total of 12 teams set to participate, the tenth position will be decided based on the ICC T20 International rankings as of July 6, 2026. Currently ranked ninth, Ireland is likely to occupy this slot. The remaining two teams will qualify through the Global Qualifier involving ten teams. Prior regional qualification events will determine which teams advance to this Global Qualifier.

Notably, teams currently ranked 14th Netherlands, 11th Scotland, and 9th Ireland could be required to play in the Global Qualifier if their rankings fall before the cutoff date. Meanwhile, the ICC has also finalized the team structure for the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, scheduled for next year in Sri Lanka. The host country Sri Lanka, along with the top five teams in the T20 International rankings as of July 6, will participate. Based on current rankings, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, and South Africa are expected to qualify.
