Haaland’s Goal Puts Norway Ahead Against Brazil
In a match held at the New York New Jersey Stadium in the United States, Erling Haaland scored in the 79th minute to give Norway a 1-0 lead. On June 6 (22 Asar in the Nepali calendar), Haaland’s goal in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier put Norway ahead against Brazil. The goal resulted from a pass by Andreas Seldrup.
Brazil missed a penalty chance in the first half and failed to take the lead. Bruno Guimarães had a penalty early in the 14th minute but missed the shot. Norway’s goalkeeper, Ørjan Nyland, saved Bruno’s penalty following a foul committed by Norway’s Christopher Ayar inside the penalty box. The referee awarded Brazil a penalty after reviewing the play with VAR.
Despite Bruno Guimarães’s attempt, Nyland successfully saved the shot. Bruno became the first Brazilian player in over 40 years to miss a penalty during a World Cup match; previously, in 1986, Brazil’s Zico missed a penalty against France. Norway remains unbeaten in four matches against Brazil and had also beaten Brazil 2-1 in their only World Cup encounter in 1998.
